Donations at drop
boxes don't always go to charities
By Ruth Handelman
Our community is among a host of communities nationwide that are seeing
the sudden appearance of unattended donation bins used to collect used clothing
and household goods.
While some collection boxes are owned by bona-fide charities, many actually
benefit for-profit organizations. It is important that donors make an informed
choice and know to whom they are giving as they clean out their closets this
holiday season.
Licking/Knox Goodwill Industries is reminding donors to carefully consider
the manner in which they donate gently used clothing and other household items.
All too often, people simply want to quickly clear out the stuff they no longer
can use and drop their unwanted items at the nearest spot, assuming they are
making a charitable donation. Unfortunately, that is not always the case. We
also encourage property owners to conduct a thorough check into organizations
that are requesting to place a donation bin on owners' properties.
Fraudulent charities often modify the names of established groups, so be sure
to read carefully the name of the charity before giving and avoid donating to
organizations that can't provide you with information about the causes they are
asking you to support. You can make sure your donations are benefiting the
people who need them most by asking a few key questions:
Will your donation be used to support a cause you believe in?
What percentage of the revenues generated by your donation will support the
mission of the organization directly?
If the collection bin is owned by a for-profit organization, how will your
donation help people in need?
Does your donation support local needs?
When you donate to Goodwill, we sell your donations in Goodwill stores and
use the revenue to fund local job training and employment programs that benefit
people with barriers to work.
Licking/Knox Goodwill funnels 89 cents for every dollar into programs to help
people who are having a difficult time finding a job, whether because of a
disability, poverty or lack of education and work experience. Because of the
generous support from our community, Licking/Knox Goodwill Industries was able
to provide training and employment services for more than 600 individuals in
2007.
This holiday season, make a difference with your donations. Donations can be
dropped off at any Goodwill store in Newark, Johnstown, Utica or Mount Vernon.
You can be confident your donations will be put to good use.
Think as carefully about where you donate the things you no longer can use as
you do about where you donate your money. Always give to charities you know and
trust.

Goodwill helps ease barriers to work

As
we pause to remember our many blessings this holiday season,
Licking/Knox Goodwill Industries would like to say "Thanks for
Giving" to our many donors, customers and community partners.
Over
the past 50 years, community members have donated their gently used
clothing and household items. Donations are sold in Goodwill Stores,
which provides the revenue needed to fund training and employment
programs for people with disabilities and other barriers to work.
Importantly, your support stays local and benefits your community. |
Tips to
consider when donating:
·
Give to charities
you know and trust.
·
Ask yourself if the
donation is in good enough condition to share with a relative or friend.
·
Leave donations at
sites with attendants on duty.
During this
holiday season, please take time to remember others and give generously to
your local Goodwill. A very sincere "Thanks for Giving." With your support,
Goodwill puts people to work.
